How come they never have to take a bath or go to the bathroom? Hygiene people!

How come the sorting hate tells them that Slytherin only takes pure blood wizards but it almost put Harry in Slytherin? Harry isn't pureblood because his mother was muggle born.

Didn't Harry see his mom die even if he can't remember it? So then he should have seen the Thestrals all along.
